January’s calendar photo, “Ice Locked”

We made it through 2021 and now face a brand new year.

Last year was tough in many ways for many people. Looking ahead, it feels like more of the same — at least right now. This can make me feel fatalistic about things, as if I have no choices. It’s as if 2022 is a locomotive steaming straight at me.

But this month’s calendar image of the lake locked in the frozen world of winter reminds me of an important point: every situation is temporary. On the lake, the ice will melt; the warmer temperatures will come; and spring will awaken.

Likewise, our future will not stay frozen as it looks right now. As 2022 comes down the tracks, things will change and thaw, making room for the blossoming of more promising days.
