August's calendar image, "Overhead"

This image was taken with a drone from about 200 feet above the beach. I like it for several reasons. The first is that it’s a different perspective on the beach I see almost every day.

Second, I like the contrasting lines and textures. Ripples from the wind are moving perpendicular to the shore, and small waves are breaking onto the shore at the same time. Farther out, running parallel to the shore, are slightly darker stripes on the lake bottom. These were formed by bigger waves as they crashed — probably the previous day or perhaps during the night.

Finally, the prints in the sand indicate that this beach is visited and used often. I like to study how people enjoy the lake, and I try to reflect that enjoyment in my images.
