Ice Mounds

This month’s calendar photo was taken at Lee Street Beach in Evanston, just a few blocks from my home. When I first arrived that wintry day, I was disappointed to not get a better look at the lake. But I was taken with the sand-speckled ice mound that concealed the water — and the textured sky above it. Rather than climbing the mound to get a better view, I decided to make it the subject of the shot.

I like the fact that Lake Michigan, while huge, can be elusive.
