Happy New Year
January's image, Sunlight and Snow, was taken from Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan at this time last year. There were thick clouds overhead, a howling wind sending snow squalls billowing across the water, and jagged ice shelves a few hundred yards from shore. Then the sun came streaming through the clouds, dramatically illuminating it all.
As often happens when I'm shooting, nature put on a show and I found myself there to capture it. Was I lucky?
The baseball legend Branch Rickey called luck "the residue of design." I've always liked that quote because it acknowledges that while luck can be a factor, success comes from preparation, experience and expectation.
So, yes, I was lucky that day, because I was ready for a lucky situation to come along. As we head into a new year, I wish you all the good luck — and success — you can design.
