Wave Action

October brings strong winds and often dramatic waves to the Chicago area. Blustery northeast winds push waves nearly the entire 300-mile length of the lake until they come crashing down on our shores and breakwaters.

How big are these waves? The highest -- recorded in 2011 -- was 23 feet. That's about as high as a two-story building!
