Lake Water Depths
No matter how many times I look out over the lake, I am humbled by its grand scale. Last month I discussed the higher water levels we’re seeing this year. But while a foot or two makes a significant difference to us, the change is relatively small compared with the lake's overall depth.
Just how deep is Lake Michigan?
The lake’s average depth is 279 feet, but at its deepest point (about two-thirds of the way up the lake from Chicago) it is 925 feet. That’s almost to the top of the John Hancock!
I like to draw these comparisons as a reminder that there’s a lot more to the lake than we see from the surface. Imagining the unseen continually inspires me as a photographer.
